Why do less men seek counselling services?
iMentalhealth Counselling Services offers mens counselling in the City of Saint Albert, Alberta and Edmonton area, with Registered Provisional Psychologist Geordy Murphy and Registered Social Worker Carson Ryner.
From my experience some men are hesitant to seek out counselling support because our culture has influenced men to handle things on their own and to not share their feelings. Many of us men were raised with phrases like “suck it up, dont be a pussy, and don’t cry.”
Unfortunately what happens though, is that many of us guys have been given the adequate tools to deal with emotions when they come. Basically, if we suck it up all the time, the emotions will eventually come out in ways like anger outbursts, addiction, abuse, agitation, depression, rage, being a workaholic.
Interestingly, if we do not learn to tools to effectively deal with our emotions as men, it could also impact our physical health as well.
The other thought I have in mens counselling, is what is our identity as men in this day and age. If it is not being tough guys who like trucks and dont cry, what does it actually mean to be a man?
These are all important questions to grasp and being two fellow men, it gives us that personal experience with the pros and cons of being a man in our culture.
Both Carson and I would love to share more with you as we meet you on your journey.
We are located at 200 Carnegie Drive, in Saint Albert, Alberta. We offer online and in person appointments.
Carson Ryner is currently taking online appointments only as a contractor with iMentalHealth.
