What does it mean to communicate?
iMentalhealth Counselling Services offers counselling for communication issues in the City of Saint Albert, Alberta and Edmonton area, with Registered Provisional Psychologist Geordy Murphy and Registered Social Worker Carson Ryner.
To communicate actually means “to commune,” however many people find that it often does not feel like you are communing very well.
Did you know that about 90% of your communication is through body language?
This means that much of what we say is with our tone, facial expressions, and what we are not communicating with our voice. Many people come to us and say, “we just do not communicate,” or “he doesnt communicate with me.”
One of the general things I like to share is that, WE CANT NOT COMMUNICATE. That is when we arent saying anything, we can actually be saying quite a lot.
Sometimes it can be like you are speaking different languages and not on the same page, because you may not have some of the tools or things to think about and discuss together. There are actually a number of principles that can help with communication.
One of the first things I may get people to do if they are having communication issues with a significant other or family member, is to learning how to speak in a way to insure that other person will hear you without getting defensive.
Secondly, to be able to practice effective listening skills so that you can make the other person feel heard and understood, even if you disagree with them.
I would love to discuss more…
