Supporting BIPOC Clients With life experience: How Tyrone Helps People Find Healing and Direction

When someone grows up feeling misunderstood, unseen, or like they’re carrying more than others realize, it doesn’t just affect their mood it can also affects their identity, their relationships, and their sense of belonging.

For many Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) clients, therapy isn’t just about stress or anxiety. It’s about navigating the daily emotional weight of being who you are in spaces that don’t always understand your story. It is hard to understand what it is like unless you have walked in their shoes. Sometimes it can be helpful to meet with someone who has experienced this.

At iMentalHealth in St. Albert,  I’m grateful to have Tyrone, a Canadian Certified  Counsellor (CCC), who brings both lived experience and professional skill to his work with BIPOC clients. He supports people through identity challenges, relationship struggles, trauma, and the pressure to “hold everything together.”

I have worked with Tyrone as his supervisor throughout his practicum and seen his passion for caring for the marginalized, the homeless, hungry and gone the extra mile for clients.

Understanding the Mental and Emotional Load BIPOC Clients Carry

A lot of the men and women Tyrone works with share similar experiences, even if their stories are different.
Things like:

  • Feeling like they have to prove themselves at work

  • Carrying pressure from their family or culture

  • Being “the strong one” all the time

  • Navigating microaggressions or racism

  • Feeling disconnected from their roots

  • Not having many safe spaces to talk about these things

These are not small issues and they can create deep emotional stress over time.

Tyrone understands that therapy must be culturally aware, gentle, and grounded. Clients need space to talk honestly without feeling judged or misunderstood.

Understanding the Mental and Emotional Load BIPOC Clients Carry

What makes Tyrone effective is that he knows what it feels like to walk through the world with layers that others might never see.

His style is:

  • Warm

  • Direct

  • Trauma informed

  • Strength based

Tyrone often works with approaches like:

  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to help clients connect to their values

  • CBT for managing negative thought patterns

  • Gestalt- real time solutions

  • Culturally sensitive counselling that respects lived experience

  • Existential– Finding meaning and Exploring the big questions about life, death, evil, pain.

Whether he’s working with someone on anger, anxiety, trauma, or relationship pain, Tyrone always brings compassion and understanding.

Why Representation Matters in Mental Health

Representation in therapy is more than a preference,  it’s a pathway to safety.
Many clients have told us that seeing a therapist who understands their culture or background helps them open up in a way they never have before.

It’s not about matching identities perfectly. Its someone who picks up on the non verbals and things that are not necessarily spoken.

Tyrone’s presence gives clients permission to:

  • Be themselves

  • Take off the mask

  • Say the things they’ve been holding for years

  • Explore their story without apology

Healing starts when someone feels seen.

What People Often Gain From Working With Tyrone

Here are common shifts clients experience:

  • Understanding themselves on a deeper level

  • Releasing the shame or pressure they’ve carried alone

  • Improving relationships at home and at work

  • Learning new ways to cope with stress

  • Feeling more confident and clear about who they are
